Getting hands-on in Science Club

I started Science Club for Year 7 and 8 to promote an interest in the Sciences, really engage the students in the subject and to develop a real wonder in how everything around us works.

The students get to do some really hands-on practical Science and being able to watch them get the hang of techniques that most students would not get to practise until A-Level and beyond is phenomenal. My degree subject has meant for six weeks of the programme, I run a ‘Crime Club’, where the girls use current Forensic techniques to solve mysteries and to really put their problem-solving skills to the test. The students learned more about fingerprinting in 50 minutes than most serving police officers get to know in their whole careers!

Part of Science Club is also showing our students how many different careers are possible within the Sciences and we were very lucky to get a Zoologist from ZSL London to Skype us from London Zoo. Her advice on how to get into Zoology as well as her fantastic stories of her research in more tropical climates was invaluable. The pictures from the Club really show how well our girls do when stretched and challenged.
