Year 3 Explore the History of Blackheath Village

This term, Year 3 set off on an exciting tour of Blackheath Village as part of our Local Area Humanities topic. The children explored historic landmarks and points of interest around the Junior School and the wider Village, uncovering fascinating stories from the past.

One highlight was learning about the curious name and history of Washerwoman’s Bottom, a grassy area next to All Saints church which was used by laundresses to dry their washing and beat carpets; another was discovering why the Heath has so few trees. With eyes peeled for clues above shop windows, we investigated the former lives of local buildings including a hidden fire station and an old bakehouse!

Our adventure ended with a lively Blue Plaque treasure hunt in Bennett Park, sparking thoughtful discussions about how Blackheath Village has evolved over time and why those changes may have occurred.

Next term, we’ll continue our journey into local history with a deep dive into the story of our own school - including a special visit to the archives at the Senior School.
