We’re pleased to share some excellent results from this term’s UK Maths Trust (UKMT) Mathematical Olympiad for Girls (MOG). Three of our students took part in this prestigious national competition, demonstrating impressive mathematical and problem-solving skills.
Congratulations to Umida (Year 12) and Ellie (Year 11) for their outstanding performances. Umida received a Certificate of Merit, while Ellie achieved a Certificate of Distinction with a score of 47 points - placing her among the top 30 students nationwide and earning her the UKMT Book Prize.
These results reflect the continued strength of Maths at Blackheath High, following another excellent year of GCSE results and ongoing enthusiasm for the subject across the school.
Leilani (Year 11) is celebrating winning the Joint First Prize in the national 11–15 age category of the British Society for the History of Mathematics (BSHM) Schools Prize. Her thought-provoking essay, “The Theory of Relativity: How Aboriginals Use Mathematics to Keep Track of Their Relatives,” won her the top accolade, along with a £100 prize and a certificate from the BSHM. She has also been invited to attend a special prize-giving ceremony and celebration held at Gresham College in Central London on 8 October.
This year’s competition focused on Ethnomathematics, inviting students to explore the cultural dimensions of mathematics through essays, presentations, films, or songs. You can learn more about the prize here.
We also want to commend Ellie and Zaynah (Year 11) for their entries. All three students worked independently during Maths lessons and at home in the second half of the summer term, after completing their Maths GCSEs early.
