Year 12 Politics students enjoyed an inspiring visit to the Houses of Parliament this term, deepening their understanding of British democracy in action.
A particular highlight of the day was encountering the remarkable contemporary light sculpture New Dawn by artist Mary Branson, created to honour the historic struggle for women’s suffrage. Positioned at the entrance to St Stephen’s Hall, New Dawn is a permanent and striking feature of the Parliamentary Art Collection. The sculpture features illuminated glass "scrolls" symbolising the petitions and determination of the women’s suffrage movement. Throughout the day, the colours and light within the sculpture subtly shift in response to the tides of the Thames - a poignant reminder of the tide of change brought about by those campaigners over a century ago.
Our students were captivated by the installation and appreciated seeing the change in light from the beginning to the end of their visit, making the symbolism of New Dawn all the more meaningful. It was a powerful moment in a day filled with insight and reflection on the enduring importance of participation in democracy.
