Dream in a Day

Over the last few weeks, each Year 8 class was tasked with learning and performing a third of an abridged version of Shakespeare’s 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream'. I was very excited to be cast as Hermia, a fierce feminist and one of the main protagonists of the play. I really enjoyed exploring how Hermia interacted with the other Athenian characters.

It was really useful to have rehearsals in class and Miss Willis, who is also a drama teacher, gave some great advice. Show day was a bit nerve-wracking, but my teachers and classmates were so supportive and the calm environment of the Wollstonecraft Room and Quad helped too. All three classes came together, alongside an ensemble of talented student musicians led by Ms Bond, to perform our wonderful play.

We transformed into our characters by donning our elaborate, colourful costumes and makeup. We had to work hard to create cohesive characters among the classes but this made the play even better, watching how each person played a character slightly differently. The day was full of excitement, laughter and magic (along with a few donkeys, a handful of fairies, a rap battle and a flash mob). It was just right balance of chaos and comedy.

My advice to the next cohort of Year 8s, who will be embarking on their ‘Dream in a Day’ adventure next year, is to learn your lines, connect with your character and most importantly, have fun!

Some comments from my fellow student actors:

'My favourite were the comedic bits because it shows how organised the other actors were, showing their genuine interest in the play.'

'The rap battle was the best!'

'I liked the royal music because I was the musician and it was fun to play.'

'I liked Bottom’s performance as it was funny. I also loved the flash mob dancing.'

'The comedy that is laced through the whole production made it so entertaining and fun to be involved.'

'I really enjoyed the bits with the Athenians, especially one of the hilarious opening scenes. I also really liked towards the end where there was a scene with Lysander, Helena, Hermia and Demetrius because their scene was full of emotion and portrayed melodrama in a really captivating way.'
