Spotlight on Diversity and Inclusion at Blackheath High Juniors

Blackheath High School is committed to creating an equal and inclusive learning environment where individual diversity is celebrated and pupils feel confident to challenge inequality.

Our Diversity and Inclusion Calendar ensures that all pupils feel valued, regardless of their social, cultural or educational needs. Each month has a theme which can be integrated into curricular and co-curricular activities during that month. We also provide ideas for pupils to raise their own awareness or advocate for each other. For example, our January theme of Communication led to an initiative to create Braille name cards for every pupil in the school. You can read more about our Diversity Ambassadors and our GDST Diversity and Inclusion Forum below.

Our Diversity Ambassadors

Year 5 Diversity Ambassadors are selected at the beginning of each academic year to promote D&I and ensure all Junior pupils feel safe, happy and represented in school. Our ambassadors Mimi, Phoebe, Amiah-Rae and Rose help to distribute our monthly Inclusion Calendar to all classrooms, ensure that class libraries are stocked with a selection of books promoting and celebrating inclusion, and present whole school assemblies each term. In addition, our ambassadors support our KS1 and KS2 Welcome Book Clubs, during which we discuss the D&I focus book of the month and plan a range of activities to support our understanding of inclusion.

GDST Diversity and Inclusion Forum

Year 5 Diversity Ambassadors Mimi and Phoebe were selected to represent our Junior School at the annual GDST Diversity and Inclusion Forum at the Trust Office in Victoria. This year the focus was on developing a greater understanding of other cultures, with the emphasis on Somali and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller culture. Mimi and Phoebe met ambassadors from across the GDST to share ideas and learn new skills. Pupils were also excited to learn Somalian weaving techniques using sustainable materials such as newspaper. They then put their new-found skills to practice during our Welcome Club sessions.
