Maths Week 2025: A Treasure Hunt, Giant Pyramids and Rock Star Battles

Maths Week 2025 kicked off with a bang - quite literally - as Pirate Sally burst into our launch assembly with a dramatic challenge! Her mission? To recover her lost treasure, using only mathematical clues to safely lure a monster away. Pupils across the school got to work, applying logic, reasoning and problem-solving skills to uncover the monster’s characteristics and outsmart it. A swashbuckling start to the week!

Building big with maths

Tuesday brought an exciting hands-on challenge for Key Stage 2: constructing a giant tetrahedron. Each year group had a different method - rolled-up newspaper, straws, or clever folding techniques. As smaller tetrahedra were combined, an extraordinary shape emerged: a towering 3D fractal based on Sierpinski’s tetrahedron!

“Our pyramid was so big we had to move it to the Gym! We made each tetrahedron with rolled-up newspaper and collaborated to stick them together until it was so big we could sit inside it!”  Sophia, Year 5

Times tables take centre stage

On Wednesday, pupils dressed as their rock star alter-egos for a day of number-powered competition. Each class battled it out in the Drop Everything and Rock Times Tables Rock Stars challenge, with every correct answer adding to their score in real time. The competition was fierce, with 5H leading most of the way - until a thrilling last-minute surge saw 5B clinch the win.

“No-one realised it at first, but when we saw we had won, there was a big cheer—we beat 5H by just a few points!” — Zola, Year 5

The week wrapped up with a sharing assembly where each year group showcased their unique tetrahedron projects - from Year 6’s intricate paper-folding to Year 3’s delicate templates. Every creation was different but equally impressive. Throughout the week, the Happy Puzzle Company also delivered hands-on workshops, challenging pupils from Reception to Year 6 with puzzles that stretched their logic and perseverance.

“Everything about Maths Week was super fun!” — Zola, Year 5
