Cloning Cauliflower at Wakehurst Labs
Recently, our Year 13 Biologists visited Wakehurst labs for a biotechnology trip.
Wakehurst, based in Sussex, is part of the Kew Gardens Trust and runs world-class research to explore ‘the value of UK biodiversity to inform nature-based solutions to critical global challenges like climate change’.
Ms Bijnens took a group of 5 A-Level Biologists to Wakehurst to take part in complex experiments such as DNA profiling, plant cloning and propagation. Whilst at the labs, the girls completed a gel electrophoresis, and micropropagation (cloning cauliflower) and also visited the vaults of the Millennium Seed Bank.
Year 13 thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to put everything they have learned into action in a real-world environment.
