How long have you been teaching PE at Blackheath High School?

I joined Blackheath High School in September 2018 so this is my first-year teaching here.

Can you tell us about your background?

I went to Sydenham High School as a student and when I finished there I knew I wanted to be a PE teacher so I studied Sports, Coaching and PE at Oxford Brookes University and graduated with a First Degree. Whilst studying I was teaching at various schools in Oxford and was fortunate enough to be offered a full-time job at The Dragon School where I trained to be a PE teacher. I decided after two years that I wanted to head back to London and start my teaching career and here I am today at Blackheath High School.

What is covered in PE? What are your students working on at the moment?

PE – gymnastics, dance, invasion games, fitness, swimming

Games – hockey, netball, cricket, athletics, tennis, cross country

Alongside the sports they learn they also gain skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, sportsmanship and perseverance.

Is it a popular choice of subject?

I believe all the students enjoy taking part in PE and Games lessons, I see so much improvement and enjoyment from everyone.

What are the benefits of studying this subject?

PE allows students to learn new skills in a variety of sports and learn how to interact with peers in more competitive and challenging situations. It provides students with an insight into a healthy lifestyle and the importance of exercise on the body.

What are the benefits of studying PE at Blackheath High School? What is unique about PE here?

The students at Blackheath High School that take part in PE lessons gain a sense of achievement. They are provided with a wide range of sports and are also given an opportunity to take part in competitive matches/tournaments.

Is there a particular aspect of the course that students tend to enjoy?

The summer term tends to be the best time for the students, they all enjoy taking part in rounders, cricket and love Sports Day.

The Sports Captains are also a fantastic part of the department, they help with running sports clubs during lunch times and help the students in younger year groups.
