Space Tech students head to Oxford Satellite Catapult Centre

Space Tech is unique course to the GDST aimed at preparing Sixth Formers for careers in the field of space technology. The year-long, pre-university, advanced computer science programme focuses on Python coding, data analysis, and space science applications. It is supported by partners like NASA and culminates in independent project work and assessments to prepare students for space industry-related further study or careers.

Year 12 student Ruth tells us about the first Space Tech Diploma trip, which took place this term in Oxford.

The day began with a very interesting coding exercise which required us to think about the geometry of space and how different objects move in space. It was challenging, but also really interesting to think about something so unique.

We heard from lots of people who study space or work in space-related industries, but one speaker who really stood out to me was Noelia. She originally studied oceanography and then used that experience in her current work with satellites. She didn’t know exactly what she wanted to do at the start of her career, but by exploring different options, she eventually found the area where she really thrived. As someone who isn’t fully sure about my own future path yet, I found that really reassuring.

We were also given a tour of the campus and got to see some of their space-related facilities. My favourite was the satellite system Oxford uses to monitor activity on Earth. The sensors can detect different materials and patterns - for example, they can track the routes of fishing ships and identify which ones might be fishing in illegal areas.

Overall, it was a really great experience, and I feel very privileged to have taken part and to have met so many inspiring people
