Celebrating Diwali at Junior School

Black History Month is a special time when we celebrate the culture, history, and achievements of black people in Britain. As part of our learning, we explored the lives of black people who lived in Britain as far back as the Roman era. We also examined the impacts of slavery and learned about inspiring figures such as Ottobah Cugoano and Olaudah Equiano, who wrote influential books and worked tirelessly to change the law and end slavery.
Across the Junior School, we celebrated Black History Month in a variety of creative and thoughtful ways. The theme this year, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride”, encouraged us to reflect on the resilience, strength and ongoing achievements of the black community - past, present, and future.
At a special assembly, our House Captains Emmy, Isla, Rose, and Darcey confidently presented the remarkable life of Maya Angelou, explaining how she overcame racism and hardship to become a celebrated civil rights activist and author. We discovered how Maya’s determination led her to become the first black female conductor on a San Francisco tram before going on to publish newspaper articles, poems, plays, and television scripts. Her messages of strength, perseverance, and courage continue to inspire people around the world. Another highlight was Amiah-Rae’s moving reading of one of Maya Angelou’s most famous poems, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.”
We also reached out to our families to join in the celebrations. Several parents gladly volunteered to share their history and culture with us through a series of workshops incorporating literature, history and dance. Thank you to all families who gave up their time to help us to showcase Black History Month. For pupils who wish to find out more about Black History Month, please explore our Diversity, Equality and Inclusion collection in the Junior School Library, or read some of the many D&I books in our classrooms.
