Blackheath Beats: Music Highlights from Autumn 1

The Senior School Music Department has had a fantastic start to the Autumn Term, filling the classrooms, corridors and performance spaces with music.

Music roundup Oct25 IMG 0099Open Morning gave girls the chance to showcase their incredible musical talent to the public, with vocal group The Rollin’ Tones introducing the Head’s Talks with a rousing rendition of ‘Come What May’; more than 30 students performing solo pieces round the Grand Piano in the reception; and our fantastic year group Rock Bands and the String Quartet taking over the Quad.

There have been several new musical initiatives this year. First up is the launch of the Blackheath High School Concert Band, combining Jazz Band and Need for Reed into a dynamic, multi-forced new ensemble. The band will make its debut performance at the Autumn Concert on 4 November.

Music roundup Oct25 IMG 0089We’re also delighted to introduce our brand-new Adult Choir! Each Monday evening, more than 50 singers - including parents and teachers from both Junior and Senior School - come together in song. Thanks to Head of Futures, Ms Day who volunteers her time and expertise as the accompanist. The choir will make its first appearance at the Christmas Concert at the Royal Naval College Chapel on 4 December.

Finally, we launched a new Tea Time Concert especially for Year 6 and Year 7 pupils. The first event was a huge success, strengthening the connection between our two sites and giving our young musicians a wonderful platform to perform.

With the next half term bringing both our Autumn and Christmas Concerts, as well as the wonderful showcaseMusic roundup Oct25 IMG 0200 edit that is House Music, there is, as ever, a whole host of activities and events for our keen musicians to be involved with.

Finally, the Music Department has welcomed Ms Rizzotta on to the teaching staff. Ms Rizzotta studied opera singing at the Saint Cecilia Conservatoire of Music in Rome and Musical Theatre at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
