Spotlight: our Year 13 Art Scholar Katie

From beauty to disturbance: exploring and sculpting elements of nature

My name is Katie and I am in Year 13 studying for A-levels in Art, English Literature and Psychology. Being awarded an Art Scholarship has provided me with more opportunities to study Art within Blackheath High Sixth Form. It is a subject I have always had a passion for and one that has only increased since studying it for A-level. These past two years have provided me with the opportunities to explore and test new methods and materials in order to discover what I am most interested in and push the boundaries as to what is possible. I’ve focused on sculptural work and growth within nature. I used materials such as laser cut paper, latex and plaster of Paris to explore all elements of nature from beauty to disturbance. The Art department at Blackheath High School ensures we develop our ideas further in materials, methods and scale to ensure our full potential is reached.

After Blackheath High School, I plan to study Prosthetics and Special Effects Design for TV and Film at Solent University in Southampton. This is an area I have been interested in since I was 14, along with being one of the main inspirations for the use of latex within my Art projects across the last year. The school has provided me with support and confidence throughout my time studying Art. Thanks to my scholarship and general support from school, I have really benefitted from progressing not only in my own studies, but also successfully fulfilling the portfolio and application process for University.
