Blackheath High School is delighted to announce its highest set of A*-B results at A-level since the Covid years, with 40% of results graded A*-A and 84% of our students offered their first choice of university as it stands. Sustaining the success of recent years, these results reflect the highly aspirational academic environment fostered at Blackheath High School.

Head, Natalie Argile, shared her pride in this year’s achievements, saying,

“These results reflect the incredible effort and commitment of our students. Behind each grade lies a personal journey of perseverance, resilience and determination. Our school embeds academic attainment in a holistic curriculum that is designed to instil confidence, happiness and a thirst for learning. We are immensely proud of these bright and ambitious young people, who now go forward with their talents and passion to even greater achievements in their chosen field.”

Our students’ exceptional A-level results have opened doors to exciting new opportunities at some of the UK’s most prestigious universities and most competitive courses. Students wishing to apply for these destinations are supported by our enhanced, bespoke Competitive Admissions Programme, which guides students through applications to the most selective universities and medicine-related disciplines.

Top university destinations this year include the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, the University of Leeds, the Royal Academy of Music and the University of Exeter.

The phenomenal range of chosen courses include Aeronautical & Aerospace Engineering, Biochemistry, Economics, English, Fashion Textiles, Mathematics and Politics.

The breadth of individual student pathways include English at University of Cambridge, Physics at King’s College London, a harp specialism at the Royal Academy of Music, Architecture at the University of Manchester, Biomedical Sciences at the University of Exeter, Politics at the University of Warwick, and Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Furthermore, every Extended Project Qualification this year achieved a grade A*-B. These independent research projects allow our students to delve into a topic of their choice and develop valuable research, project management and presentation skills. The experience is highly valued by universities, with these studies equivalent to an extra half an A-level carrying further UCAS points. This year, students have presented EPQs ranging from ‘Exploring the Importance of Music in Shakespeare’s Plays’ to ‘Can Mammals Reproduce by Parthenogenesis?’.

Natalie Argile continues,

"It is inspiring to see our students following paths driven by their true passions. The variety of universities and courses they are choosing highlights not only their impressive academic talents but also their courage to pursue what excites them, something we fully encourage and celebrate.

"Our support for academic growth is yielding such positive outcomes, from exceptional exam results to students securing the opportunities they aspire to. Sixth Form and academic excellence remain at the heart of our School Vision, and it is wonderful to see the progress reflected in the successes of our students today.

“When students leave Blackheath High, they become part of an extraordinary group of inspirational women who form the GDST alumnae network. Our newest alumnae will go on to be cherished members of this life-long community of over 100,000 women. I know that today’s achievements will propel these students and those that come after them to have a sustaining impact in any direction they choose for themselves.

"We are immensely grateful to our dedicated teachers and supportive parents, whose guidance and encouragement make all the difference. As we celebrate these achievements, we look forward to watching our students continue to thrive in higher education and beyond, and nurturing the next generation of thinkers, creators and trailblazers.”

Meet Lauren: singer and future author

Lauren IJP 14 8 25 BHHS 0012Creative Lauren is delighted that her stellar A-level grades (English Literature A*, Religious Studies A* , EPQ A* and History A) have won her an extremely prestigious place at Cambridge University to study English. She also has the added honour of taking up a Magdalene College choral scholarship. Here is her story:

I joined Blackheath High from my local primary school and immediately loved the positive environment, with teachers committed to ensuring learning was adapted to each individual. I was awarded Academic and Music scholarships, alongside the KM Watts English Scholarship at Sixth Form. These opportunities helped me develop my passions and challenged me to achieve my very best in these areas, supported by the scholarship programme where I was encouraged in my studies by SLT members. My enjoyable experience at Blackheath High has been fuelled by the small size of my cohort which allowed me to get to know my peers well but also get the most out of each lesson.

At Blackheath High, I have had the pleasure of taking on such a plethora of opportunities - from working as a librarian, which consolidated my love for English, to leadership roles such as Form Captain, Deputy Head Student and Peer Mentor. These roles not only helped me gain confidence in leadership but also in skills such as public speaking and organisation - which ultimately prepared me for my UCAS journey. As a Music scholar I had the honour of singing in 3 ensembles a week as well as performing at incredible venues including Fairfield Halls, the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Naval College - inspiring me to win a Choral Scholarship at Magdalene College Cambridge.

“I am so excited to be reading English Literature at the University of Cambridge; Blackheath High has curated my passions surrounding literature and given me so many opportunities to delve deeper into the full range of literature. From creative writing competitions to poetry contests, I have enjoyed being challenged to assess my own understanding of the boundaries of writing - my dream is to be an author/poet. Winning the Blackheath High Greenman public speaking competition for my speech ‘The Pen is Mightier than the Sword’ was a tremendous honour, encouraging me to research the place of literature in the world’s current climate and hone my persuasive skills. Blackheath High has provided me with the most valuable lessons both in and out of the classroom and everyone here has encouraged me to always strive to achieve my full potential.”

Meet Tiana: future harp soloist

Tiana IJP 14 8 25 BHHS 0024Tiana leaves Blackheath High with a top grade ‘A’ in Music to fulfil her dream of taking up a highly sought-after place at the Royal Academy of Music, specialising in harp. Her journey through Blackheath High has been remarkable – she shares her reflections and thoughts on her next steps.

“I joined in Year 5 and chose Blackheath High because of the welcoming and inclusive community feel. My classmates and teachers have always been very friendly and supportive and there is a strong emphasis on individuality, with a genuine appreciation for and recognition of each person’s unique qualities.

“The teachers at Blackheath High have been consistently understanding and supportive, always willing to listen, discuss ideas and provide tailored help and support sessions. The SEND department was also approachable, offering both academic assistance and emotional support.

“As an A-level Music student (along with Latin and Maths), I found so many musical opportunities, including String Quartet, Jazz Band, and Sinfonia. Some of my favourite memories include performing with my friends at our many performances and music festivals. I performed at Pop Fest, Open Days and the Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer concerts, playing the violin and harp, and I once conducted too. I am also proud to be the record holder for the most House Music competition wins.

“I found so many ways to be a leader - I was Deputy Head of Diversity and Inclusion, Music and Academic Scholar, and Careers Ambassador. I led and took part in numerous school events and assemblies; a couple of my favourites were the LGBTQIA+ Pride Sponging Event and the Dyslexia and Music Assembly. I also founded the Alexander Technique Club, focused on increasing body awareness during everyday activities, promoting more efficient movement to reduce physical strain and encouraging stress relief.

“Blackheath High has helped me build confidence, especially through the many opportunities of performing music and delivering speeches. The teachers have nurtured my resilience, encouraging me to step outside my comfort zone and grow both personally and artistically.

“I have known for a number of years that I wanted to pursue a career as a professional harpist. I’m thrilled to be joining the Senior Royal Academy of Music, where I hope to perform and tour as a soloist, in chamber ensembles and in orchestras. I’m especially eager to study jazz harp and hope to perform with a jazz band.”

Meet Maddie: future biochemist

Maddie IJP 14 8 25 BHHS 0016Maddie has earned a superb set of A* grades across Physics, Maths and Chemistry as well as an A in her EPQ, entitled ‘Can Mammals Reproduce by Parthenogenesis?’. She is now excited to head off to study Biochemistry at Imperial College London.

Of her dream career, Maddie says, "I would love to carry on studying Biochemistry until the end of time! So, probably I'd like to be an academic at a leading university, such as Imperial College. I want to produce lots of interesting scientific research in really cool journals to contribute to the field."

Maddie has so many good memories of her time at Blackheath High. She comments, "One of my best memories is of the school food! Honestly though Blackheath High has been such a good school. This was actually the first school I went to because I came here in Nursery, but then we moved to Cambridge and I came back again properly in Year 10. One of my favourite parts of the Senior School was getting involved in co-curricular clubs, especially the STEM and Eco Clubs. Studying living things like our stick insects and Cleopatra the bearded dragon, makes learning come alive."

She feels that Blackheath High School has supported her to feel ready for the future! Maddie explains, "Our Enrichment lessons have been great, with lots of life lessons and life skills development. And of course, my stellar teachers have helped me to achieve the best grades. I really feel prepared for my next steps."

I'm not entirely sure what I want to do in the future, but I know that I can have my options open with Maths. It’s also just a really interesting subject – I find it fascinating and I'm excited to get into mathematical research.

Sophia has cherished her time at the school and particularly in the Sixth Form, she continues, “Our school is a community where it’s easy to get to know one another and the teachers know the students really well.
