Celebrating the Year of the Horse

This year marks the Year of the Horse, and our Mandarin students have been celebrating Chinese New Year with a rich programme of cultural experiences both in and beyond the classroom.

Year 9 and 10 Mandarin students began their celebrations with a fascinating cultural trip to the British Museum. Exploring the China and South Asia galleries, students were challenged to locate specific artefacts, a fun and engaging way deepen their understanding of Chinese history, art and traditions while also sharpening their observational skills.

The trip continued in Chinatown, where students sampled traditional Dim Sum and a variety of Chinese dishes before taking time to explore the vibrant streets filled with lanterns and colour. The excursion offered a wonderful opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning with real-world cultural experiences.

Meanwhile, Year 8 Mandarin students immersed themselves in the festive spirit through an energetic Chinese dance workshop, later showcasing their performance at the Lunar New Year assemblies at the Senior and Junior Schools. As part of the celebrations, students also sang a Chinese New Year song, recited a poem from the Tang Dynasty, performed a Chinese tongue twister, and introduced key traditions and customs associated with the festival, bringing the culture to life for their peers.

From museum artefacts to dance, poetry and traditional cuisine, this year’s Chinese New Year activities offered our students a vibrant and meaningful celebration of Chinese culture, which they embraced with enthusiasm and curiosity.
