TechTastic is an exciting creative club designed for students who love big ideas and want to explore the world behind the curtain. Running during Wednesday 4a and led by Head of Drama, Miss Coles, the club offers students a unique opportunity to discover how storytelling is brought to life through theatre design.
Through a range of hands-on, practical activities, TechTastic introduces students to the key elements of backstage theatre. Members explore set design, learning how to sketch, plan and build professional-style miniature stage models. They experiment with lighting and atmosphere, discovering how colour and light can transform a scene, and design and create props that support character and narrative on stage.
The club encourages both collaboration and independence, giving students the choice to work as part of a team or develop their own individual design concepts. A key feature of TechTastic is the chance to present and pitch ideas in a “Dragon’s Den”-style format, helping students to build confidence, communication skills and creative thinking.
TechTastic is already generating huge enthusiasm, with students attending in large numbers and showing a growing interest in the backstage elements of school productions. The club aims to inspire future stage designers, architects, artists and technicians, while also supporting the wider school community by developing skills directly linked to theatre productions — including backstage roles for the annual school musical, where interest has already surged.
Creative, practical and inspiring, TechTastic offers students a chance to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and discover the excitement of theatre design under the expert guidance of Miss Coles.
