Head of German

Required from: September 2024

Contract type: Permanent

Hours: Full Time

Salary: Competitive

If you are an experienced German teacher who can foster a love of German in pupils, this is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the Modern Languages department at Blackheath High School.

German is very popular at Blackheath High School and there is a lot of enthusiasm for it. As Head of German, you will ensure this continues, and that pupils understand the importance of German in the global community.

You will be responsible for teaching German to students of all age ranges from 11 – 18 and will equip pupils with sound linguistic skills through challenging and differentiated lessons.

Leading by example, you will ensure the smooth and efficient running of the department and inspire and motivate a team of subject specialists through your own passion for the subject.

You will also be working closely with the Head of MFL to embed the MFL department vision and development plan and will contribute effectively to the MFL calendar and running of trips, such as organising and leading regular trips to Germany.

The ability to teach German across the full range of KS3, KS4 and KS5 and another language to GCSE is desirable. Spanish would be desirable at KS4.

About the School

Founded in 1880 by the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), the UK’s leading network of independent girls’ schools, Blackheath High School is a selective school for girls aged 3–18 and was rated “excellent” in our most recent ISI Inspection. We are fortunate to be located on the edge of the stunning Heath and within easy reach of historic Greenwich and Canary Wharf. Following an £18 million investment, our new Senior School opened in 2018, and has been provided with state-of-the-art facilities to ensure that our school environment matches the excellent standard of education we provide.

There are many good reasons to work with us. Blackheath High School has a real sense of community, and you’ll be part of it. You’ll be part, too, of the wider GDST family and you’ll be in the company of some of the best and brightest people in independent education. We also offer a variety of benefits, such as:

  • Competitive salaries and pay progression
  • Access to extensive professional development opportunities
  • Training grants for qualifications
  • Generous pension schemes
  • Free life assurance benefit
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • A discount of up to 50% on fees for children at GDST schools
  • Interest free loans for training, computer purchase and travel season ticket
  • A Cycle to Work scheme
  • Competitive terms and conditions of employment

To apply, please visit www.gdst.net or for further details please contact Sharon Read at s.read@bla.gdst.net

Applications must be received by: 6 May 2024 at 12 noon.

Interviews will take place on: 10 May 2024.

Applications should be sent as soon as possible. Blackheath High School reserves the right to appoint to this post before the closing date if necessary and we would therefore very much encourage early applications.

Blackheath High School and the GDST are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo appropriate child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

The GDST is committed to diversity, inclusion and real change: a family where every individual is valued, respected and included.
