Blackheath High Junior School strives to offer a broad range of sports and activities as part of its Physical Education Curriculum. We aim to provide children with quality teaching in a variety of sports. The level of achievement and recognition is developing rapidly at Blackheath High Junior School and we are aiming to instil in all our pupils a positive attitude towards sport and fitness. The foundation we provide encouages our pupils to engage enthusiastically and with commitment in physical activities throughout the remainder of their education and indeed for the rest of their lives.
Netball is played during the autumn and spring terms, with hockey being introduced for Year 6 after Christmas in the spring term. Dance and gymnastics is also delivered to all of the girls throughout the year. In the summer the girls play rounders, tennis and also compete in athletic events.
Blackheath High Junior School has excellent facilities, on the junior school site with have a gymnasium, hall and netball court area and there are strong links with the senior school, as we share our field site which consists of a large grass area, an Astro Turf, Netball and Tennis Courts.
There are many inter-school matches in the major sports for the girls and a list of these are published in the school calendar. Pupils can also find out about team selection and results on the physical education notice board at school. All events and results are published in our school's weekly newsletter, 'HIGHlife.' We encourage parents to support our teams where possible.
Clubs are a big part of school life at BHS and are particularly important part of the sporting programme at the school. There are many clubs in operation over the year includiing netball, cross country, hockey, gymnastics, dance, circus skills, ballet, yoga, street hockey and rounders. The club programme is designed to be as inclusive as possible and most clubs are open to all. Staff members run the vast majority of clubs, however our staff are assisted by external coaches who visit the school to run some of the of the more specialised clubs. Many of our girls get the opportunity to train and play at local clubs.
The girls at Blackheath also have the opportunity to take part in annual sports days, mini marathon, tennis festival and inter-house competitions including netball, hockey, cross country, speed stacking and rounders. More recently Year 6 and 7 Sport House Festivals have been introduced.
"Your Year 6 Netball teams were brilliant in the Tournament held at Colfe's School. Congratulations to Mrs. Hallett and the players of both A and B teams. They should be very proud of their performance as they played really well. I have seen the girls from their first match and saw the progress they have made. They had been winning all their matches lately and it was good to see Team A receive medals at the Tournament. The team played exciting matches and tied in Second Position. All credit to Mrs. Hallett for coaching and nurturing the girls and bringing out the best in them."
