Welcome to Early Years Foundation Stage

The girls join the Foundation Stage classes, usually at 3 years old into the Nursery class or 4 years old into Reception. Our Nursery places are heavily oversubscribed so early application is advisable.

They soon settle into the warm and friendly environment of the school. Each class has a Teacher and Nursery Nurse. The girls spend the day working in well equipped areas, inside and out.

The classes are small; 16 girls maximum in the Nursery, and 24 in Reception. Friendships are soon made and many last a life-time. We encourage each girl to reach their full potential by working in small groups with their friends and a teacher or, on a one-to-one basis with the teacher.

"The school thoroughly fulfils its aim to promote academic excellence and nurture a love of learning, with an emphasis on developing independent, enquiring mind. Children in the EYFS make extremely good progress, with the overwhelming majority exceeding the Early Learning Goals by the end of the Reception year. In the EYFS, the staff understand the children extremely well and help them to learn to be independent. We aim to nurture and stimulate their interests through guiding their work through a variety of topics each term.

The activities undertaken by the girls are usually cross-curricular but in our planning, recording and reporting we follow the Government guidelines of Early Years Foundation Stage Principles, which focuses teaching into seven areas - three Prime and 4 Specific as detailed below:

    and the four Specific areas of learning:
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design


The girls leave the Foundation Stages confident, caring and courteous with an academic grounding ready to be built upon in the Key Stage 1 years at Blackheath High School.
