Junior School Redevelopment Project
Blackheath High Junior School is a remarkable school where all round achievement is exceptional because we deliver an education that provides opportunities to excel academically, develop skills, gain knowledge and to strengthen character.
We aim to equip our girls with the confidence needed to see opportunities not boundaries, challenges not obstacles and with a belief in themselves that they have an important contribution to make to their School, to their community and beyond.
Plans were approved by the London Borough of Greenwich in February 2015 for improvements to the Junior School Kitchen Area and the Nursery Ramp entrance.
The improvements to the kitchen and dining room have resulted in the provision of a catering experience commensurate with modern day expectations. The Nursery ramp entrance and associated landscaping of the Theatre entrance will take place in Summer 2016 and will meet the demands of accessibility to our wonderful facilities.
Nursery Entrance Ramp
In 2006 the Nursery moved in to spaces originally occupied by a Dance Studio at the lower ground level; a new exit door was installed and the existing, rather steep, staircase given a makeover. This part of the school is also used for Extended Hours Care: a thriving After School Care programme and a lively and well supported early morning Breakfast Club. Currently, there is no direct, level access for wheelchair users or parents with pushchairs into the main Nursery or Extended Hours Care entrance. A more appealing and, more importantly, safer access to this entrance is vital. The construction of a ramp and the landscaping of the nursery entrance provides a more accessible route, while lifting the whole approach to provide a more inviting and welcoming entrance than at present.
Kitchen Area Refurbishment
School lunches are compulsory for all Junior pupils, and we wanted them to enjoy the best possible dining experience. These facilities have been enhanced with the refurbishment and redecoration of the kitchen and servery (making the latter more suitable for smaller children), the rebuilding of the scullery and external storerooms to improve the kitchen working spaces, and the provision of additional dining space. This has greatly improved the appeal of the catering facilities and enhanced the overall lunch experience in the Junior School.
