English in the Sixth Form
The English Department offers both English Literature and English Language at A Level.
The English Literature course features study of Aspects of Narrative, Comedy, The Gothic, and Critical Approaches. Students develop their skills in analysing literature through studying a range of classic and modern drama, poetry and prose texts, including the works of Shakespeare, Tennyson, Dickens, Ian McEwan and Angela Carter.
In the English Language course students develop their skills in using, understanding and analysing spoken and written language for particular audiences, purposes and contexts. The course introduces students to linguistic methods of analysis and includes study of Child Language Acquisition and The History of English. Students also carry out independent research projects on a topic of their choice.
