Music

Co-curricular performance and enjoyment of music is encouraged and made available to all pupils through a wide range of weekly, termly and annual musical activities.

IMG_1284 croppedThe choirs, instrumental ensembles and soloists of Blackheath High School can be heard rehearsing and performing throughout the school year, both on the school site, in facilities which include the purpose-built 300-seat theatre and old chapel, and at venues across London, the UK and Europe. Recent performances have taken place at St. John’s, Smith Square, Eltham Palace, Blackheath Halls and the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, at which a choir and orchestra of over 150 of the school’s students performed. Recent Music tours include Amsterdam*, Barcelona and with a tour to Venice planned for February 2017. In collaboration with the drama department, students have staged musical productions including ‘Beauty and the Best’, 'Annie', ‘Grease’, ‘Bugsy Malone’ and ‘Dracula Spectacula’ (where cast, chorus and band members are pupils). Among the many musically able students at Blackheath High School, a significant number attend Saturday music schools, including Junior Trinity whilst some have gained places in national groups such as the National Youth Choir.

Instrumental and Singing Lessons IMG_1464
Many students receive weekly, individual instrumental and singing lessons delivered by a staff of 13 visiting music teachers. At present, students receive tuition in flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, voice, guitar and drum kit. If you would like your daughter to receive tuition in these or any other instruments, please contact the director of music for an application form.

Year 7 ‘Taster’ Instrumental Lessons
In addition to optional instrumental/vocal tuition offered to all students, all members of Year 7 are currently offered the opportunity to learn a musical instrument which they have not before studied. This opportunity takes the form of free instrumental tuition and the loan of a musical instrument for one year. The experience has inspired many students to continue to learn and enjoy participating in a variety of instrumental ensembles.
