ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
NO TWO JOURNEYS ARE THE SAME
The Sixth Form at Blackheath High is often described by our students as the very best part of their school journey. It’s a time filled with new opportunities – intellectually, socially and personally. With outstanding teaching, exceptional A-level results, a close-knit, supportive community and a warm, dynamic atmosphere, our Sixth Form offers the perfect blend of challenge, independence and fun.
With teachers who know you and challenge you to aim higher, you’ll shape a path that reflects your passions and ambitions. You might lead a Society, win an essay prize, publish your writing or mentor others – or do all of these and more. Whatever academic direction you take, your journey will be purposeful, challenging and entirely your own.
SPECIALIST SUPPORT
Sixth Form is where your future really starts to take shape. Choosing the right subjects and pathway matters, and at Blackheath High you’ll be supported to make decisions that feel right for you – academically, personally and professionally. Our Futures and Higher Education team work closely with students from the outset, helping you explore your options, sharpen your ambitions and plan confidently for what comes next, whether that’s a top university, a competitive course or an alternative pathway that excites you.
Alongside academic challenge, you’ll be supported by a strong pastoral framework that gives you real independence and responsibility. Sixth Form at Blackheath High is about finding your voice, building confidence and taking ownership of your journey. Our students leave self-assured, motivated and ready to step forward – not just with strong results, but with a clear sense of direction and belief in themselves.
A-LEVELS
We offer a broad choice of A-levels and the freedom to pursue the subjects that really interest you. Our curriculum is future-focused, academically challenging, and intellectually engaging, giving you the opportunity to express your creativity and individuality.
A-level study at Blackheath High adopts a university-style approach, with small seminar groups of around five to ten students. This format encourages in-depth discussion, independent thinking and close academic relationships with subject specialists. You’ll develop advanced skills in analysis, debate, and presentation, all within a supportive environment where curiosity and originality are valued.
Alongside academic study, you’ll receive one-to-one mentoring to help you build the mindset and skills needed for life beyond school. In regular meetings with your tutor, you’ll reflect on your progress, set goals and plan your next steps – whether that’s university, an apprenticeship or another exciting path.
EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION
The EPQ is your opportunity to take a deep dive into a topic of personal interest to you – it could be unrelated to the subjects you are studying, or it could be connected across different disciplines. Supported by our specialist EPQ mentors, you will design and develop your project independently, building valuable university-level research skills. Worth half an A-level and highly regarded by universities, the EPQ is an optional qualification that many of our students choose for the academic stretch and advantages it offers.
STRETCH & CHALLENGE
Our Stretch & Challenge programme complements academic study, giving you a wealth of enrichment and extension recommendations to enhance your learning. Every academic department offers tailored guidance and resources – from lectures and workshops to competitions and awards, to books, films and places to visit. From exploring a subject you love to preparing for university applications, you’ll be supported to take the lead in your own academic development.
You will also be supported to aim high and put your learning into action through academic competitions and awards. Many of our students choose to enter challenges like the Maths Olympiad, CREST Gold Award, and subject-specific essay competitions, developing independence, resilience and intellectual curiosity along the way. Your teachers will provide expert support at every stage, from choosing the right opportunities to mentoring you through submissions and preparation.
This ethos not only builds confidence and stretches your thinking, but also strengthens university applications and helps you stand out. Most importantly, it reflects the culture of ambition we nurture: a Sixth Form where you are supported to take the lead, challenge yourself and shape an academic journey that genuinely excites you.
