senior school drama
a stage for every story
Drama is an important part of life at Blackheath High School, not just as a popular and high-achieving academic subject, but also for the creative expression and performance opportunities it empowers in students.
An extremely popular GCSE subject which achieves exceptional results, many students continue on to Drama A-level before progressing to leading universities and drama schools, from RADA to Trinity Laban.
ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE
There’s something for every aspiring performer including LAMDA, theatre trips, TechTastic drama club and a diverse calendar of performances including the Spring Musical and Summer Play.
A highlight of the year is the Gadesden Inter-House Drama Competition, where students in Years 7-9 showcase their talent through monologues, duologues and technical creativity. With rehearsals in lessons and a grand finale held in our Theatre to a large audience, it’s an opportunity to build confidence, collaborate, and celebrate the power of performance.
DRAMA ON THE CURRICULUM
Our Drama curriculum equips students with the creativity, confidence and critical thinking skills to thrive both on and beyond the stage. It is designed to build deep subject knowledge, encouraging students to explore performance from multiple perspectives – social, emotional, cultural and political.
Through devising original theatre and analysing key practitioners, students learn to communicate powerfully, think reflectively, and articulate their ideas with clarity and flair. Drama fosters empathy, courage, and a belief in the power of storytelling to spark change and shape society.
Offstage, students can also train in technical aspects of theatre production using our state-of-the-art equipment including a professional sound and lighting booth. Workshops, masterclasses and theatre trips inspire and build knowledge and confidence.
A DEDICATED THEATRE
The Blackheath High Senior School Theatre is a dynamic home for drama. Its raised stage, raked seating for 350, and professional lighting, sound and technical equipment allow students to fully immerse themselves in every aspect of theatre – from acting and directing to stagecraft and production.
