BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
a world of learning
We believe learning happens everywhere – in classrooms, on trips, on the sports field, and in the friendships formed along the way.
FIND YOUR SPARK
From Year 7 onwards, students are encouraged to dive into our wide array of more than 80 co-curricular clubs, discovering new interests and developing existing talents. There truly is something for everyone – from taking up a new sport or honing musical skills, to sharpening performance through debating or Drama, exploring creative pursuits like film-making, or enjoying mindful activities such as crocheting and our ever-popular Guinea Pig Club.
societies
Students can also delve into a range of Societies, run by Sixth Formers pursuing their own diverse interests. From Model United Nations, Sustainability Society and Law Society, to quirky groups like Shark Soc, French Film Society and Code Crackers, every student will truly find her thing.
MUSIC FOR ALL
look to the future
From the moment they join, students benefit from our Futures programme, which is designed to teach them the skills that will be in demand in the future workplace. As they move up through the school, a dynamic programme of enrichment activities, trips, workshops, events, leadership opportunities and much more introduces them to the core skills that will set them up for success.
enrichment
Several days a year, we suspend lessons to focus on exciting curriculum-enriching experiences as part of our Girl emPowered Enrichment Programme. A snapshot of recent adventures includes:
- Sunny days out in Broadstairs and at Adventure Island
- Fascinating immersive opportunities, from experiencing WWI trenches to becoming a journalist for a day
- The legendary Year 8 day trip to France to make croissants and visit a snail farm
- Our Futures AI & Gaming Conference; an introduction to the huge range of opportunities and careers in the rapidly evolving tech sector
TRIPS & VISITS
Our extensive trips programme is designed to broaden horizons, build skills and ignite curiosity.
As well as residential trips aimed at forging friendships – such as the annual teambuilding PGL trip for Year 7, and the Bushcraft trip for Year 8 – we enhance classroom learning with a range of trips and visits linked to the curriculum. Whether that’s measuring coastal erosion in Dorset, a visit to the US Embassy, or visiting places of worship, opportunities abound.
We explore the world with overseas residential trips, some linked to subjects (History trips to Poland and Berlin, Geography trips to Iceland and the Azores, Art trips to New York and Amsterdam), and others for fun and adventure (Christmas markets in Cologne, skiing in Italy and Austria).
expeditions
Other residential trips widen horizons further and give students the chance to really challenge themselves – from ambitious month-long expeditions to Peru and Nepal where students camp, hike and support local charities; to horizon-broadening visits to Cambodia and Tanzania; to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, offered at bronze, silver and gold level.
centre stage
Drama plays a central role at Blackheath High and our Senior School Musical sits at its very heart. Renowned for its ambitious scale and high production values, it offers a wealth of opportunities both on stage and behind the scenes, so every student can play a part. From building confidence and creativity to working as part of a professional production team, the Musical is a highlight of the year and a wonderful shared experience.
Combined Cadets Force (CCF)
Our Naval CCF offers Year 9 a unique chance to develop leadership, resilience and teamwork through adventurous, military-themed training. Based at Blackheath High under the supervision of a CCF commander, afloat training sits at the heart of the programme, with cadets learning sea skills, leadership and adventurous skills. Beyond school activities, they can take part in camps, water sports, scuba diving, climbing, mountain biking and even gain qualifications such as National Pool Lifeguard Award.
The CCF adds a dynamic, hands-on dimension to life at school, complementing academic learning and supporting wider development awards such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
