Creative arts

Blackheath High School’s outstanding Art and Design department attracts students of all abilities with a highly creative, diverse and inspiring curriculum. Creativity, curiosity and experimentation are at the heart of our approach, equipping students with invaluable skills in the creative arts and beyond.

ART

Art and Design are among our most popular GCSE subjects, with Textiles added at A-level. Many students continue their artistic journey into Sixth Form before progressing to leading universities and specialist colleges in art, design and fashion.

Our purpose-built Art Department is an inspiring, light-filled space with specialist teaching rooms and gallery areas. Students are introduced to a wide range of materials and techniques, from painting, ceramics and sculpture, to digital photography and video, building strong foundations in observation, research and collaboration.

“Art at Blackheath High is about curiosity, creativity and courage. Our students experience an exciting and challenging journey through a wide range of media – from drawing and painting to sculpture, photography, printmaking and mixed media – encouraging freedom, experimentation and creative risk-taking. It’s a joy to watch their creativity flourish."

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

Led by former professional architects, our Design Technology department focuses on the beauty of structure, form and creative solution design. Our specialist Design studio combines the latest technology – including CAD CAM, 3D printing, and laser cutting – with traditional methods such as wood-cutting and pewter casting, allowing students to iterate, prototype and solve problems innovatively.

A CREATIVE COMMUNITY

Every student is encouraged and empowered to get involved in Art and Design, whether or not they take them as curriculum subjects beyond Year 9. Our rich co-curricular programme includes clubs in embroidery, life drawing, photography and graphic design.

THE FASHION SHOW

Our student-led Fashion Show and Sustainable Fashion societies invite girls to design and create their own garments, culminating in a high-profile annual catwalk event.

EXPANDING HORIZONS

Trips and workshops are central to the Art and Design curriculum, sparking inspiration and a wealth of ideas for innovation. From immersive workshops at school, to London’s galleries and design hotspots, to creative destinations across the world – including New York, Berlin, Amsterdam and Bologna – we are constantly seeking ways to expand our students’ horizons.
