a day in the life
New adventures
No two days in our Nursery are the same, as we support girls to explore the world around them with curiosity and joy. At the same time, a calm, consistent and gently structured routine provides a reassuring rhythm to the day, supporting emotional security, self-regulation and growing independence. This careful balance allows girls to feel safe, confident and ready to learn.
Our optional Breakfast Club is part of our wraparound care offer. With a range of delicious, healthy breakfast options, exciting games and activities and the chance to spend time with their friends, many of our pupils say Breakfast Club is their favourite way to start the day.
Our first adventure of the day is Carpet Time, as we embark on series of tasks designed to create familiarity and routine. We check to see if the Cheeky Number Fairies have moved any of our number line around; discuss the day of the week and the weather; clap out our age in numbers; and discuss our learning topics for the day.
Independence is encouraged at every step of the way. From putting their own coats away in the morning, to deciding what they would like to explore and learn that day, we support girls to make choices, think creatively, discover new things and learn to persevere when things don’t go to plan. Carefully designed learning zones, both indoors and outdoors, allow pupils to select their own resources, follow their interests and take increasing ownership of their learning.
As well as foundational learning such as literacy, numeracy and phonics, pupils benefit from specialist lessons in Music, French, PE and Stretch & Strength, all taught by our expert teachers. Every Wednesday morning, we join older girls from Reception and Year 1 for a joyous singing assembly – a real highlight of our week! In the Summer Term, Nursery pupils enjoy watching the older girls perform for the whole school, sparking excitement and confidence as they begin to look ahead to their own move up to Reception.
We head to the Dining Room, where our chef and his team serve a delicious choice of meals prepared on site using fresh, nutritious ingredients. A wide range of options is available each day, with all allergies and dietary requirements carefully catered for. Lunchtime is another opportunity for independence, as girls choose their own meal, carry it to their table and enjoy eating with friends.
forest school
Tucked away within the grounds is our Forest School, a magical place where adventure (and learning!) awaits. Donning our wellies, we observe how trees and plants change over the seasons, explore and identify wildlife, and use tools and natural materials to look after the space and create our own features. Led by our specialist Head of Outdoor Learning, pupils cherish this space and the curiosity, independence and love of nature it inspires.
After lunch, pupils spend valuable time playing, bonding and exploring our extensive indoor and outdoor spaces, before settling back in for afternoon learning. We support girls to identify their own interests and learning priorities and encourage them to choose from a wide range of activities, from reading and phonics to opportunities for personal, social and emotional development.
Girls enjoy a snack of fresh fruit or vegetable crudités, at the same time as sharing their ideas and adventures with Everywhere Bear, discussing their Tapestry News (our online learning journal), or enjoying a story.
Small groups and individual teaching
From Nursery to Sixth Form, Blackheath High takes a truly personalised approach, ensuring every girl is supported to find her own path and achieve her goals. In Nursery, pupils benefit from regular one-to-one learning time with teachers, allowing activities and learning opportunities to be carefully tailored to provide both support and appropriate challenge as each child progresses.
Workshops and Pop Ins
We create regular opportunities for you to spend time in your daughter’s learning environment, see her work on display and experience Nursery life first-hand. Our Early Years specialist teachers run workshops to share guidance and support you in nurturing your daughter’s learning at home.
