Year 4 have been learning how to use hacksaws safely in Design Technology this term, as they build the frames for their automata toys. Watching them tackle a new skill, problem‑solve and grow in confidence has been great to see.
Automata toys are mechanical objects that move, so before the girls can get to the creative part, they need a solid frame to work from. That means reading technical drawings, interpreting measurements and cutting materials accurately – skills that demand focus, patience and a steady hand, all of which the girls are developing quickly.
Good making starts with strong foundations. In Design Technology and beyond, it’s something we come back to again and again.
