Year 4 animal encounters

A very brave Year 4 get stuck in handling snakes, snails and a tenrec!

Cockroaches that hiss and geckos that eat their own skin? As part of their Science learning about animals and adaptations, Year 4 met a range of weird and wonderful creatures who, in one way or another, are brilliantly adapted to their natural environments. The budding Attenboroughs shared their knowledge and understanding of animal life and also learnt a wealth of new and interesting facts.

Did you know that geckos shed and then eat their own skin to avoid leaving a scent trail for predators – or that hissing cockroaches use their hiss to communicate and scare off threats? Year 4 certainly do now, and they loved every moment of discovering these extraordinary survival strategies.

They were also exceptionally brave, either just observing, stroking or holding the creatures, which included a crested gecko from New Caledonia, hissing cockroaches, a very cute tenrec (Google it!) from Madagascar, giant African snails and milk snake from Central.
