Design and Technology is about far more than making products – it’s about solving problems, thinking creatively and designing for a more sustainable future. This year, Blackheath High has been leading that conversation both within the classroom and across the GDST.
Head of Junior Design and Technology, Tristram Batt, has recently shared his thinking in an article exploring how 3D printing can be used more purposefully in primary education. Rather than treating 3D printing as a novelty, Tristram argues that it should be used to develop creativity, problem-solving and iterative design skills, helping pupils see digital design as a meaningful part of the design process rather than an end in itself.
At Blackheath High, this philosophy is already embedded throughout our all-through Design and Technology curriculum, where pupils begin using CAD in Year 4 before building on these skills throughout their school journey.
Meanwhile, Blackheath High also welcomed Heads of Design & Technology from across the GDST as our Head of Design & Technology at Senior School, Mr Masters, hosted the Trust’s annual subject leaders’ conference in his role as GDST Subject Chair for Design & Technology. The day brought together colleagues to share innovative teaching ideas, explore how real-world design challenges can inspire GCSE and A-level coursework, and hear from professional designer and Blackheath High parent Natalie Sensier-Renaud about the vital role of design thinking beyond the classroom.
Together, these initiatives reflect Blackheath High’s commitment not only to delivering an exceptional Design and Technology education, but to helping shape the future of the subject across the GDST and beyond.
