Nurturing a love of maths

Nursery pupils have been busy exploring maths through hands-on activities, stories and play.

Our Nursery pupils have been busy exploring the exciting world of maths through hands-on activities, stories and play. They began by investigating 2D and 3D shapes, hunting for squares and rectangles around the classroom after enjoying Bear in a Square, before building with cubes, cylinders, spheres and prisms to discover which shapes could stack and which could roll. Along the way, they learnt new mathematical vocabulary including corners, sides, faces, edges and vertices.

More recently, the children have been developing their number skills through songs, practical resources and games. They have explored the concept of one more, one less and different ways of making numbers to five, confidently explaining their thinking using mathematical language such as add, equals and altogether. World Cup sticker collections have also provided a fun way to practise counting and adding goals together.

It has been wonderful to see the children’s confidence grow as they discover that maths is all around them and, above all, fun!
