Junior School Sports roundup

The GDST Rally, International Day of Dance, a Mini Marathon and more!

This half term has been packed with sporting energy, teamwork, and celebration across the Junior Schools. From competitive fixtures and GDST rallies to our annual min-marathon and International Day of Dance, these events have brought everyone together and been a great demonstration of determination, skill, and fantastic sportsmanship – both on and off the field. Here’s a snapshot of some recent highlights:

GDST Tennis & Cricket Rally

In mid-May a group of our Year 5 & 6 girls travelled to Northampton High to take part in the GDST Summer Rallies in cricket and tennis. It was a brilliant day of competition, teamwork, and determination. In tennis, Saadat (Year 6) and Florence (Year 5) represented Blackheath High superbly. In singles, Saadat won 6 out of 8 matches and Florence won 7 out of 8. In doubles, the girls won 5 out of 8 matches. They finished 5th out of 8 teams, an impressive achievement – especially as they competed as a pair rather than a full four‑player team. Their resilience and teamwork were outstanding. In cricket, our girls fought tirelessly throughout the day. They narrowly lost several matches by only a few runs, but their progress, positivity, and determination were clear in every game. It was a valuable experience and a great opportunity to develop their match play. Well done to all the girls who took part.

Cricket

  • Year 6 cricket team played two exciting matches against Sydenham High. Both teams performed brilliantly, showing great teamwork and determination. Although the games were incredibly close, we narrowly missed out by just 5 runs and 8 runs. Well done to all the girls who took part, and a special congratulations to our players of the match for both batting and bowling.
  • Our Year 6 cricket team enjoyed a fun and exciting cricket afternoon, playing matches alongside their parents. The girls had a fantastic time developing their skills, working together as a team and learning more about the game in a supportive and enjoyable environment. Throughout the afternoon, they demonstrated great enthusiasm, determination and talent, all of which will be invaluable in their future matches.
  • Years 3 & 4 competed in a series of matches against Bickley Primary School. For our Year 3 pupils this was their first fixture of the year and they performed brilliantly. They showed excellent teamwork, determination and enthusiasm throughout the game, only narrowly losing by just 4 runs. The Year 4 team also played exceptionally well and secured a fantastic victory, beating Bickley 63 runs to 61. Both teams represented the school superbly and showed great promise for their future matches. Well done to everyone involved!
  • Finishing this half term, Year 4 won a great fixture against Sydenham & Dulwich Girls, while Year 5 played Benedict House Prep.

International Day of Dance

  • International Dance Day was a huge success at the Junior School. We were so impressed by the way everyone joined in – pupils and teachers alike. Thank you for dancing along as we visited your classes; your energy and enthusiasm made the day feel really special. Although we didn’t officially announce a competition, we did spot some fantastic movers and groovers. In particular, both of our energetic Reception classes stood out for their brilliant participation. And the teachers who we thought had the best moves were Ms Pascall and Ms Lowinger.

Athletics

  • Year 3 pupils travelled to Bromley High School to take part in an exciting athletics competition against Bromley High, with the girls competing in teams across a variety of events. Whether they were running, jumping, or throwing, they gave every challenge their absolute best effort and supported one another every step of the way. It was wonderful to see such excellent sportsmanship, encouragement, and confidence on display. Their hard work throughout the different events truly paid off, with our three teams achieving fantastic results by finishing in 1st, 2nd, and 4th place overall – an incredible accomplishment that everyone should be very proud of.

Mini Marathon

Our Mini Marathon was a fantastic afternoon of energy, determination, and House spirit. Every girl who took part showed brilliant effort, whether they were running in the competitive race or the fun run. A huge well done to all of you. In the competitive races, our top three runners in each year group were:

    • Year 3: Aurelia, Mei S, and Zoya
    • Year 4: Sylvie, Olivia Saunders, and Riona
    • Year 5: Isobel, Hanneli, and Florence
    • Year 6: Eloisa, Isla, and Saadat
    • Year 7: Darcy, Damla, and Emerson

For the overall House results, it couldn’t have been closer. Morden finished in 1st place with 133 points, with only 2 points separating 1st and 2nd, and just 4 points between 3rd and 4th – an incredibly tight competition.

EYFS Sports Day

Our EYFS Sports Day was a wonderful morning filled with great energy, brilliant effort, and lots of smiles. Nursery and Reception pupils were supported by the fantastic leadership of our Year 6 Sports Prefects, Nursery Prefects, Reception Prefects, and House Captains. Their encouragement and guidance helped the younger girls shine in every activity.

The weather was perfect for a morning of sport — cool, bright, and with a few welcome appearances from the sun. The girls ran, jumped, balanced, and cheered with so much enthusiasm, showing confidence and joy throughout.

We were then treated to a fantastic (and seemingly never‑ending!) parents’ egg‑and‑spoon race, which brought plenty of laughter and competitive spirit. To top it all off, the tug of war was a brilliant finale, with families giving it their all.

Thank you to all families for coming out and supporting your girls. Your presence and encouragement made the morning even more special, and we know the pupils truly appreciated it.
