Friendships and feelings

Nursery explores what makes relationships special.

Nursery’s Personal, Social and Emotional Development work this term has centred on the Jigsaw topic ‘Relationships’ – exploring what makes relationships special and how we connect with the people around us.

Girls began by looking at photographs of different families, sharing their own family stories with Jenny Jigsaw and building confidence and a sense of belonging in the process. Inspired by the story Mabel and Me, they then reflected on their own friendships, each choosing something they truly value about a friend. This fed naturally into our Friendology programme, which gives children a shared language and toolkit for building and maintaining positive friendships, from how to be a good friend to how to navigate falling out and making up.

We have also explored how to manage feelings when things don’t go to plan, discussing strategies such as talking to someone, taking time out, cuddling a toy, or using movement to release energy – all part of our work with the Zones of Regulation framework.

It has been wonderful to see the children growing in empathy, resilience and kindness, developing not just as learners, but as thoughtful, supportive members of our community.
