Exploring Numbers and Measures

Nursery learn how to measure, compare and group using mathematical language.

It has been a busy term in Nursery Maths, with children exploring comparing amounts, counting to five, recording numbers and measuring length, mass and capacity – all through hands-on play and discussion.

Highlights included sorting cuddly toys into groups (with some impressive flexible thinking when a grey cat didn’t quite fit either category), a circle counting game that doubled as turn-taking practice, and using balance scales to compare shells and discovering that sometimes things can have equal mass too.

Maths is everywhere at this age, and parents can easily continue the learning at home -rolling a dice together and asking who has more and who has fewer is a great place to start.
