WELLBEING & SUPPORT

happy & healthy

Wellbeing is fundamental at Blackheath High. It is not just a buzzword – it provides the framework for everything we do, and forms the heart of our ethos and approach. We understand that happy pupils are happy learners, and that the foundations we lay now for positive mental and physical health will last a lifetime.

A TRUE COMMUNITY

Our close-knit community is fundamental to creating a happy, healthy environment. From Nursery to Sixth Form, Blackheath High girls are supportive, empathetic, collaborative and kind. Our pupils understand that they play an active role in shaping the culture of our school.

Every relationship – between peers, teachers and the wider community – is grounded in respect, kindness and positivity. Small class sizes mean our teachers know each pupil as an individual, tailoring support to help every girl thrive. We actively foster relationships throughout the school with the friendship-skills based URStrong ‘Friendology’ programme, our ‘big sister, little sister’ ethos, buddy schemes and many opportunities for kindness and collaboration.

Nurturing tomorrow's leaders

Leadership plays an important role at our Junior School – we believe that wellbeing is most powerful when pupils are informed, curious and genuinely heard. Everything we do is designed to build confidence, resilience and self-belief – skills that will last a lifetime.

Girls from Reception upwards are encouraged to take an active role in school life through our School Council, where they help shape how the school is run. Council members meet regularly to discuss issues that matter to them, lead assemblies, support fundraising initiatives, and ensure pupil voice informs the school’s ongoing strategy and development.

By Year 6 every pupil takes on a prefect role, choosing her area of personal interest and working in teams to develop and present action plans, report to the Head, and create meaningful change. From diversity and inclusion to Nursery buddy schemes, running assemblies and lunchtime support, leadership at Blackheath High Junior School is inclusive, purposeful and empowering, ensuring every girl feels valued, confident and heard.

PASTORAL CARE

The dedicated Pastoral Team – which includes a School Nurse, on-site counsellor, Head of Wellbeing and SENCO team – works cohesively to support all pupils from their very first day with us.

And not forgetting Pip, the school dog; an essential member of the wellbeing team!

HEALTHY MINDS AND BODIES

We believe good food fuels great days. Our expert catering team cooks nutritious, homemade meals from high-quality fresh ingredients to give girls the energy, focus and wellbeing they need to thrive.
