the junior school difference
At our Junior School, academic excellence sits alongside a wealth of co-curricular activities, exceptional pastoral care and a close, supportive community to create a truly special environment. A girls-only education offers something unique: this may be the only time in your daughter’s life she will be in an environment designed with her in mind, with people that put her at the centre of all they do and with all choices open to her.
A lifelong love of learning
The foundations for a bright future are built in early years education. At Blackheath High Junior School girls can dream big, discover their passions, find their voice and learn without limits. Empowered by the energy, expertise, and enthusiasm of our dedicated, subject-specialist teachers, and inspired by a rich curriculum and exciting co-curricular opportunities, our girls are equipped from day one with a genuine love for learning and an outstanding education that is fit for the future.
The Junior School Effect
Research shows that girls educated in GDST junior schools are more likely to take risks, embrace challenges and believe in their ability to overcome problems. By the age of nine, 79% of GDST girls feel confident tackling difficulties, compared with 58% nationally, and only 6% say they avoid activities because of their gender – a striking contrast to the 37% of girls and 31% of boys in national samples.
An Education Designed For Girls
The all-girls environment plays a key role. Free from gender stereotypes, our pupils are encouraged to explore every interest, ask questions and take risks. Classrooms are designed around how girls learn best, creating a culture where they feel heard, valued and confident to try new things. As a result, our pupils grow into articulate, adventurous learners who are ready to make decisions for themselves, look after their wellbeing, and move on to our Senior School with confidence.
exceptional facilities
Girls at our Junior School benefit from outstanding facilities, including a gym, theatre, spacious hall, playground with wellbeing garden, Forest School, outdoor classroom, climbing wall, and multiple netball courts. Specialist classrooms for Science, Art, DT, and IT ensure a future-ready learning environment. Just a short walk away, our multi-acre Sports Campus offers tennis and netball courts, an athletics track, cricket nets, an all-weather AstroTurf pitch for football and hockey, and a fully equipped pavilion.
one school
As an all-through school, we passionately believe in the powerful benefits of a 3-18 education. Nurturing success and happiness from her first day at Blackheath High School to her final year in our outstanding Sixth Form gives each girl continuity, confidence, and a deep sense of belonging.
We are one connected community. Junior School girls regularly spend time with their ‘big sisters’, enjoy access to Senior School facilities, and become familiar with their future teachers through a carefully managed transition process that begins in Year 4. By the time they reach Year 7, they arrive confident, connected, and ready to thrive.
We are proud that the vast majority of Junior School girls continue their journey with us into the Senior School.
Mighty girls challenge
The Mighty Girls Challenge is a unique programme that inspires pupils to be Ambitious, Brave and Curious – our ABCs for future success. Born from the Head’s Mighty Girls Club (a Year 6 discussion group exploring inspiring women and what it means to be fearless today) the Challenge combines the future-focused skills identified by the World Economic Forum – such as problem-solving, critical thinking and resilience – with our pupils’ own ideas and ambitions.
Through creative, physical and reflective challenges, girls build confidence, curiosity and self-belief, developing the skills and mindset to embrace new experiences and thrive far beyond the classroom.
