JUNIOR SCHOOL MUSIC

music from the heart

Music plays a joyful role in life at Blackheath High Junior School. Whether it’s a choir rehearsal, a budding pianist practising, or a performance coming together, music is part of the rhythm of our days. We see music as more than a curriculum subject or a hobby – it is built into the school’s heart and soul.

A MUSICAL CURRICULUM FOR EVERYONE

We are passionate about helping girls to find their voices in everything we do, and this extends to our musical offering. Our inclusive curriculum is designed to allow girls to explore their musical interests and passions without any limitations or stereotypes.

Every year group from Nursery to Year 6 enjoys an hour-long weekly lesson with our specialist Head of Junior Music. Our primary Music curriculum encourages creative exploration through playing, singing, composing and listening, with each area thoughtfully interwoven to develop confident, curious and well-rounded musicians.

From Year 2 to Year 5, pupils’ musical learning is extended through small-group instrumental lessons, with instruments loaned free of charge for an entire term. This means that by the time they leave the Junior School, every girl will have had the opportunity to explore four different instruments, helping her discover where her musical interests and strengths lie.

“I firmly believe that all humans are musicians and that we can all lead musical lives. I would love everyone, most importantly our girls, to feel like they can engage in, or with, music throughout their lives.”

CO-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES

Co-curricular music is equally rich and rewarding, with non-selective choirs and orchestras alongside auditioned ensembles. Our Junior Chamber Choir is especially popular and has won several awards.

Individual instrumental and vocal teaching

A team of 16 visiting music teachers offers one-to-one tuition (available from Year 1 at an additional cost), covering a wide range of instruments including piano, drums, strings, brass, woodwind, voice, harp and more. Pupils who learn an instrument, either in or out of school, are warmly encouraged to perform in Junior School concerts throughout the year.

shining in the spotlight

Performance is central to music at Blackheath High Junior School, helping pupils build confidence, celebrate their achievements, and experience the joy of sharing their talents. From regular choir, orchestra and ensemble concerts, to ambitious stage productions, girls have countless opportunities to perform and grow.

her voice, her way

With specialist teaching and dedicated performance spaces – including our purpose-built Theatre at the Senior School – pupils quickly learn to find their own unique voice in front of an audience. Whether taking part in the Year 6 musical, joining voices at the GDST Sing concert, or representing the school in national competitions such as the Girls’ Schools Association Choir of the Year, every performance builds pride, confidence and lifelong memories. Each Christmas, our choirs fill the historic Old Royal Naval College Chapel in Greenwich with music – a truly magical highlight of the year.
