ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY

Our curriculum takes girls on a journey of discovery, building not only knowledge and skills but also the ability to think independently, collaborate effectively, and act with compassion, confidence and agency. Alongside strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, Junior School pupils benefit from specialist teaching in subjects such as PE, French, Music and Art, supported by outstanding facilities including a dedicated science lab, DT studio, theatre and our five-acre Sports Campus.

BROADENING HORIZONS

Pupils are empowered to aim high, excelling in national academic competitions and showcasing their talents in extraordinary venues like the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. As part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), girls also benefit from unique opportunities such as the GDST Maths Conference at the University of Oxford and the cutting-edge DST Science Conferences at the Royal Institution – experiences that expand their worldviews, build their confidence and ignite a lifelong passion for learning.

Modern foreign languages

Languages are part of everyday life from the very beginning. Specialist teaching from Nursery, including learning with a native French speaker, helps pupils develop a natural ear for language and the confidence to communicate in an interconnected world.

We bring languages to life through lessons, clubs, cultural celebrations such as Year 4 French Soiree and our popular French residential in Year 6.

As an all-through school, our unique ‘Big Sister Little Sister’ language programme sees Senior students supporting younger pupils in French and German, helping them build confidence and fluency through games, conversation and shared learning. Fluent French speaking pupils also benefit from Native Speaker Club, supported by older students to extend grammar, reading and writing skills.

DESIGNED FOR GIRLS WHO DREAM BIG

We nurture bold, curious girls ready to explore, ask questions and embrace challenge. As experts in girls’ education, we empower girls from the youngest age to believe that they can do anything – there are no gender stereotypes here, just a love of learning and a determination to reach your personal best.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Outdoor learning is a vital part of childhood development, helping to build confidence, curiosity and independence from an early age. At Blackheath High Junior School, our pupils benefit from a fitness trail, gardening club, and our partnership with The Hive, an ecology park-based Forest School in southeast London. This love of the outdoors nurtures a spirit of adventure and aligns closely with our Mighty Girls Challenge – a creative, skills-based programme for Years 3 to 5, designed to encourage every girl to be ambitious, brave and curious (the Blackheath High A, B, C).

PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE

We equip girls with the skills, confidence and mindset they’ll need for the years ahead. Our buddy system fosters friendships across age groups, giving younger girls a sense of belonging and older pupils valuable leadership experience. As an all-through school, we create a seamless transition process to our Senior School. Beginning as early as Year 3, this empowers girls to feel confident, prepared and ready to take on the next stage of their learning adventure.
