SUSTAINABILITY

living green

At Blackheath High School, sustainability is more than a value – it’s a way of thinking, learning and living. As educators, we have a responsibility not only to teach our students about the science of climate change, but also to equip them to live in a world affected by it.

“Sustainability is a green thread that underpins and is woven through everything that we do.”
Catherine Buckle, Chief Transformation Officer, GDST

Action led

Our students are deeply engaged with the urgency of global climate issues. Like so many young people across the globe, they are rightly demanding action. Passionate and purposeful, they seek real-world solutions and champion action, both in everyday choices and through ambitious projects.

Staff and students continuously work to make our environment more sustainable. Sustainability is embedded across the curriculum and enriched through co-curricular activities such as Eco Club, Design for Life, and our popular PreLoved initiatives. We have been awarded several prestigious accolades, including the EduCCate Global Bronze Award, Eco Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction, and the RSPB Bronze Award.

This ethos is also reflected in our Futures programme. Events like Women in Leadership and our focus on future-ready skills support careers in sustainability and innovation. In 2024, we hosted the first GDST Sustainability Conference, welcoming students from across the GDST to explore pathways to building a greener future.
