your future, your way

The Futures programme goes far beyond traditional careers advice. It is a pioneering, holistic framework that is built into the curriculum and supports every stage of each student’s journey with us, equipping them with the skills the World Economic Forum identifies as essential for future success in a fast-changing, digitally connected world. From the moment students join, they benefit from continuous skills development, tailored one-to-one guidance, leadership opportunities, inspiring workshops and world-class collaborations.

PowerSkills

Our PowerSkills Toolkit gives every Blackheath High girl the confidence and skills to thrive in a changing world. From leadership and collaboration to resilience, creativity and critical thinking, we focus on the attributes that future employers value most. As technology and AI transform the workplace, we also ensure students are equipped with the latest digital knowledge, so they can step boldly into the future as innovators, problem-solvers and leaders. For young women in particular, these skills are vital in a world where leadership is still unequal – empowering them to find their voice, claim their space, and lead with confidence.

World ready

GDST research shows that just 8% of girls nationally say that school prepares them for life, and nearly half (49%) say they feel unprepared for the future. They are also clear that being world-ready means more than just careers advice – it’s about looking beyond traditional, narrow definitions of leadership and success and helping them building confidence, curiosity and real-world skills.

Our Futures programme readies girls for how the world works and how to fearlessly carve their space within it. From managing money and budgeting, to online safety, engaging with different viewpoints and exploring current affairs, we equip every student with the knowledge, resilience and independence needed for life beyond school.

"Tourists follow the guide and stick to the route. Backpackers on the other hand are resourceful: they plan ahead, solve problems and adapt when things change. At Blackheath High, we prepare backpackers, not tourists – and we build this mindset into every aspect of school life, equipping girls with the confidence, resilience, curiosity and practical skills to flourish in the next stage of their journey."

An all-through approach

The Futures framework begins from day one. Our youngest learners develop social skills, curiosity and early leadership through play and guided exploration. In the Junior School, co-curricular activities, collaborative projects, early STEM, our Future Forward careers event and the flagship Mighty Girls Challenge teach core skills, while building confidence and resilience and encouraging girls to try new skills.

By Senior School and Sixth Form, students take on advanced leadership roles, real-world problem-solving, internships and specialist workshops that prepare them for higher education and beyond. Alongside this, our careers programme, extensive events and one-to-one guidance give every student the chance to explore her passions, challenge assumptions about the world of work and imagine what her future could be. Working closely with families, employers and experts, we make sure each student leaves us confident, ambitious and excited for what comes next.

A networked world

Our extensive Sixth Form programme of careers events, visiting speaker days, student conferences, trips, workshops, partnerships and much more introduces students to a world of limitless opportunity, while teaching the value of connection and collaboration.

Through the Girls Day School Trust, we provide Sixth Formers with numerous opportunities to practise their future-facing skills, with initiatives such as the Space Technology Diploma – applying science, maths and computing to real-world space technologies; and GDST Lead – equipping them with the transferable skills needed to become future leaders and entrepreneurs.
