Sciences

Blackheath High School is a private secondary school in London and offers an extensive range of subjects to all our girls. Read about the different Sciences we offer.

Biology

Head of Department

Mr D Laber

Teaching Staff

Mrs K Elliott

Science Technicians

Mrs A Birkett
Mrs R Richards

Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. Modern Biology is a vast and eclectic field, composed of many branches and subdisciplines. However, despite the broad scope of Biology, there are certain general and unifying concepts within it that govern all study and research, consolidating it into single, coherent fields.

In general, Biology recognizes the cell as the basic unit of life, genes as the basic unit of heredity, and evolution as the engine that propels the synthesis and creation of new species. It is also understood today that all organisms survive by consuming and transforming energy and by regulating their internal environment to maintain a stable and vital condition.

Pupils in Years 7 and 8 study Biology as part of a combined Science curriculum. From Year 9, students will begin the AQA GCSE Science course, learning Biology as a separate subject alongside Chemistry and Physics.  In Sixth Form, Biologists can choose either the AS or A-level OCR Biology A qualification.

To enhance their academic studies, students of Biology will have the opportunity to extend their learning outside of the classroom. Animal workshops, field study investigations, competitions and external lecturers all help to give pupils a well-rounded experience of this exciting, evolving subject.

Physics

Head of Department

Mr P Jordan

Teaching Staff

Miss I Chowdhury

Science Technicians

Mrs A Birkett
Mrs R Richards

Physics is the scientific study of matter and energy and how they interact with each other.  This energy can take the form of motion, light, electricity, radiation, gravity… just about anything.

Physics deals with matter on scales ranging from sub-atomic particles (i.e. the particles that make up the atom and the particles that make up those particles) to stars and even entire galaxies.

All students study Physics up to GCSE level. The course includes development of a range of practical skills and understanding how science works.  At A-level students currently follow the OCR Physics A course in which students conduct a range of practical tasks from each of the topics studied.

We offer a range of co-curricular clubs including: ‘Physics for tomorrow’, ‘Hawking Society’, ‘Physics support’ and ‘Physics stretch and challenge.’ There are also opportunities to visit Greenwich observatory.

We aim to develop problem solving skills and a passion to explain phenomena in Physics.

Chemistry

Head of Department

Dr A Mustafa

Teaching Staff

Mrs N Argile

Science Technicians

Mrs A Birkett
Mrs R Richards

Chemistry is the study of substances, what they are made of, how they interact and what role they play in living things. Chemistry fundamentally is the science of materials. It is about gases, liquids and solids; how they interact and how they may be made. In fact, it is the study of all materials and is vital to every aspect of your lives.

From the moment you are born, and throughout your life, you are surrounded by Chemistry; in the air you breathe, the food you eat and the clothes you wear. Think about plastics, pesticides and drugs; fireworks, fuels and explosives. Chemistry is, literally, everywhere.

Chemistry and the chemical sciences open up a world of possibilities and expand your choices. No matter how the world changes in the 21st century, Chemistry will always be at the centre of science and at the heart of life. Training in chemistry or the chemical sciences gives you the skills needed for a wide range of careers.

All students study Chemistry up to GCSE. The course includes development of a range of practical skills and understanding how science works.  Typically, around a third of students in the sixth form study A-level which currently follows the OCR A Chemistry syllabus.  As part of this specification, students conduct a range of practical tasks from each of the topics studied.

There are a range of clubs and competitions offered to students, including Chemistry for tomorrow, Science Club, Chemistry support, Chemistry Olympiad and the Royal Society of Chemistry “top of the bench” challenge. There are also opportunities to visit The Royal Society and the Science museum.

We aim to develop problem solving skills and a passion to explain material processes in Chemistry.
