60 seconds with Mr Sodhi, Head of Business and Economics

Our Head of Business and Economics Mr Sodhi tells us about how his past experience benefits the learning of our students at Blackheath High Sixth Form.

Tell us about yourself

I live and hail from Kent. I’ve been married for 7 years now and have 5 year old daughter and a 2 year old son.

This is my second year of teaching Business and Economics here at Blackheath High School, though I have been teaching for over 13 years now.

I didn’t go into teaching straight out of university though. I spent a number of years in the city working in finance as well as few years undertaking a construction project in India.

These experiences really help me to bring my subjects to life allowing me to use some real-life stories.

What do you like most about your job?

The variety and working with enthusiastic students and colleagues. I really like the energy and atmosphere of working with young people and knowing that you are able to make a lasting and positive impact in their lives. I also love my subject and its relevance to the world.

What makes working here at Blackheath High School so rewarding and enjoyable?

The really great atmosphere of the school and the chance to really get to know the students that you teach and make a real difference to each individual. The great staff and excellent facilities and lovely new building all add the experience.

What has been your biggest achievement at Blackheath High School?

Helping all my students last year get a place at their first-choice university and coming second in the House Debating Competition!

What has been your biggest challenge at Blackheath High School?

Building a rapport with the lower school - who I don’t teach - and getting them interested in subjects they have never done before is a challenge I enjoy.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

With two young children spare time can feel hard to come by, but I do manage to fit in time to work on my classic car and play a variety of sports. In the holidays I spend most of my time travelling and have the good fortune to have seen large parts of Asia, Africa and Europe.

Tell us something surprising about yourself

I am still an active member of the British Army Reserve as an Infantry Officer. This has given me the opportunity to train and graduate from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, meet a number of royals at Buckingham Palace and experience a short deployment to West Africa.
