Blackheath High Switches Off

As part of a campaign to save energy in schools, Blackheath High took part in The Pod’s 'Switch Off Fortnight' in November along with over 2200 other schools from the UK, Turkey, China and Australia.

Form Captains and Vice Captains attached Switch Off notices and stickers near light switches and other electrical devices to remind everyone to turn them off when they were not in use and our Eco Club carried out an initial energy audit of the school. They counted the number of electrical devices that were switched on, off or on standby all around the school, including lights, smartboards, printers, photocopiers, computers etc. Exactly one week later, the Eco Club repeated their audit, recruiting enthusiastic helpers along the way and spreading the energy-saving message.

All their data was collated and entered into the Pod’s database and showed a saving of 3.12 kilowatt hours (kWh) over each 24-hour period from the initial energy audit to the final audit. This difference alone would save over 600kWh of energy over the school year. To put that into context, that is enough energy to make 23,712 cups of tea!

Well done to everyone - keep up the good work!

Blackheath High School is a private girls school in London, teaching children aged 3-18.
