Getting musical for co-curricular

From ‘Tutti Flutti’ to Rock Band, Blackheath High girls are spoilt for choice with co-curricular activities for music. Mrs Gunton, Director of Music and School Consultant Teacher, tells us more.

We have a thriving Music department at Blackheath High and offer a wide variety of co-curricular activities. We have a 50-strong chamber choir which is open to everybody, Vocalise (a small a capella group for elite singers) and a range of percussion groups including Beat it, the Sambinos (a large-scale samba band) and Mini Mallets (a beginner level ensemble that use unique instruments including dustbins, booms and tennis rackets!).

We embrace lots of different genres of music. We have Rock Band that headlines at the annual Pop Fest concert in the spring term, small chamber music groups such as Higgins Quartet (our elite string quartet) and Folk group that play Celtic music on authentic instruments. We have also got instrument specific groups such as saxophone and ‘Tutti Flutti’ for flute. We also encourage students to get involved and run groups, especially Sixth Form students. Erin in Year 13 runs Ukulele orchestra and Olivia in Year 12 helps with Mini Mallets, which is fantastic.

All our groups are fun and there is such a range of activities on offer. Our girls also get to perform in amazing venues such as the Chapel at the Old Royal Naval College, participate at high profile school events including the Prize Giving ceremony, and undertake fundraising activities such as carol singing at Christmas.

Whether you want to perform Handel’s Messiah or songs from the musical Wicked, there really is something for everyone!
