Introducing new Junior School Head of KS2 PE - Miss Newton

We are delighted to welcome former England International netball player, Miss Amanda Newton to Blackheath High School, taking over the role of Head of KS2 PE.

Here, Miss Newton tells us a little about herself:

I joined BHS to teach sport to girls in KS2 and I also teach a few afternoons with the Senior School students. I was a full-time athlete for many years, then I went into teaching and delivering as a Coach Educator to school teachers and club coaches.

I am now a retired athlete but I played netball for twelve years at International level for England. I achieved 100 caps and also captained the team. I have won bronze medals at Commonwealth Games and World Championships. I visited many countries for my sport and also played for a club side in New Zealand for a season.

I am currently England Netball Defence Technical Coach and a National Academy selector. Last summer, I was part of the coaching team for the World Netball Championships in Australia, in which the England team finished third. I have also worked as a technical coach for Hertfordshire Mavericks and Loughborough Lightning in the Netball Superleague Competition.

Following my retirement from international level netball, I decided that I wanted to teach Physical Education to Junior School aged children. When I came to the interview here, I was made very welcome and was impressed by all the staff and girls I met.

I aim to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere in PE lessons and increase the girls’ confidence in a sporting environment.

We are sure that Miss Newton will be a real asset to our school.
