Why Blackheath High?

Blackheath High has a leading Sixth Form centre for girls aged 16-18. The Sixth Form experience has been designed to ensure you can flourish and develop the skills and knowledge that equip you to thrive in higher education, life and the world of work:

A bespoke approach

Our bespoke Sixth Form curriculum offers you both breadth and specialisation with 27 different A-level subjects alongside the Extended Project Qualification at AS-level, and a Global Perspectives enrichment elective course. You can choose to complement this curriculum through a variety of ‘super-curricular’ activities on offer, such as leading an academic society or attending a subject extension discussion group.

Free thinking and intellectual curiosity characterise our very best Sixth Form students and our teachers create a supportive environment in which ‘thinking outside the box’ is encouraged and valued.

Beyond the classroom

Alongside the academic curriculum, you can choose from an array of co-curricular and enrichment activities that support and enhance your curriculum experience including over 80 different clubs. You can lead an academic society, apply for a leadership role in the Head Girl or House teams, act as a mentor to younger students and benefit from the exciting Sixth Form sports programme with choices like dance and rowing. For the more adventurous, you can join one of our expeditions overseas (like Tanzania or Cambodia) or complete your Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.

Sixth Form life

Our Sixth Form has an ’extended family’ feel where every girl is welcome. We pride ourselves on strong supportive relationships with and between all of our students. Your Sixth Form tutor group and tutor are a source of advice and support, with Year 12 and 13 students sharing experiences and knowledge.

The Sixth Form common room is the hub of Sixth Form life where stories are shared over a cup of tea and plans made for the latest fundraising initiative or the Sixth Form Ball. The maturity and increased independence of Sixth Form means relationships with staff are characterised by mutual respect and care. There are a myriad of people to turn to for support, from our school counsellor to the Head of Sixth Form and her experienced tutor and pastoral team. You will also benefit from the unique Positive Project which supports you in developing strategies and tools to support good mental health.

The Annual Sixth Form Fashion Show is a big part of the school year and brings together students from all years of the school.

Girls First

We remain a single-sex Sixth Form due to the undeniable advantages it gives our students. We hold a firm belief that girls do better in an environment where they are free to be themselves; a belief that is supported by much well-documented evidence. The mark of a Blackheath High girl is the easy confidence that they exude, an inner-confidence which stems from being in an environment that fosters them as individuals and does not impose ceilings upon what they can achieve.

The GDST family

Blackheath High is one of 25 schools in the UK who are part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) network, the leading group of girls’ schools in the UK. This is immensely powerful, not only whilst you are at school, but also once you graduate.

You will have access to a whole host of opportunities that no stand-alone school can provide such as specialist subject diplomas, university workshops, mentorship, insights into a range of professions, and unique work experience opportunities facilitated by the GDST's CareerStart programme in partnership with organisations such as the Bright Network and the LSE, alongside businesses such as Barclays Bank.

Once you graduate as a GDST alumna, you then will join a network of at least 70,000 talented women around the globe - all interconnected by their link to the GDST and by their desire to support and network with each other. From the Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police to the Ambassador to Estonia; you will find GDST alumnae wherever you turn, and they are always looking to lend a helping hand.
