- Junior Music Header Group Girls
In addition to a strong music curriculum, the Junior school has a very good reputation for its choral singing and most girls learn to play an instrument.
We are extremely proud that our Junior Chamber Choir has won their category in the Beckenham Festival for the past three consecutive years. The Choir also won the Bromley Music Festival on entering in 2015 for the first time, singing in the School and Youth Choirs class for Years 3-6.
All the girls have weekly music lessons. The most important feature of musical education at the Junior School, and one which ensures music lessons are fun, is a practical approach to the subject using voices and a wide range of tuned and non tuned classroom instruments to make music. Listening skills and learning to read music are also part of the curriculum.
Every girl from Year 3-6 will be taught singing as a part of their weekly music lesson. We also run a very successful Chamber Choir that involves girls in Year 5 and Year 6 who audition for this very lively and successful choir. In Year 2 pupils are given free tuition in a stringed instrument of their choice, many choosing to continue in the following years, and in Year 3 all the girls learn to play the recorder. All pupils have the opportunity to play in the school orchestra. Many girls take Associated Board or Trinity Guildhall music exams where they achieve excellent results.
We are delighted to have been recognised with the ‘Artsmark Gold’ award by the Arts Council for our “excellence in arts and cultural provision.” Click here for more information on Artsmark.
All the girls, whether they learn to play an instrument in or out of school, are also given the opportunity to perform in assemblies, concerts and festivals, many of which are attended by parents.
There are three annual concerts for parents and friends where all the choirs have an opportunity to sing, and three musical productions incorporating music and drama. In the summer, the Junior girls join the Seniors for the Summer Concert, a concert which has been held previously at the Royal Naval Chapel in Greenwich.
HSBC Project: 'The Song of the Earth' Concert (Spring 2015)
Our Junior school has been working together with pupils from Invicta Primary in an HSBC-sponsored community music concert project. The essence of this new project has been to bring children together to sing and perform in a community concert. The 'Song of the Earth' cantata of eleven songs follows the fairy tale of 'The Nightingale' by Hans Christian Andersen, about an emperor who prefers the tinkling of a bejewelled mechanical bird to the song of a real nightingale.
