Wollstonecraft Programme - Evolution of Comedy

The Evolution of Comedy Wollstonecraft course at the Senior School has involved much laughter and fun from the students. We have explored how comedy has evolved over time, exploring mime artists including Charlie Chaplin and then moving on to sitcoms and stand-up acts. We have enjoyed exploring comedy characters, especially looking at the idea of why and how something is funny. Unpicking comedy is very important, because to write comedy is very difficult and has a very delicate and well-structured format.

Today’s lesson saw us exploring comedy characters, such as Phoebe Buffay from ‘Friends’ and Morris Moss form ‘The IT Crowd’; looking at aspects of their comedy persona and how this is developed consistently over time.

I have really enjoyed this course and it it great to hear the students laughing and enjoying their learning. My favourite aspect has been looking at stand-up and asking the students to recount their own, personal, anecdotes and unintentionally becoming stand-up comediennes in the making!
