My reading and mentoring experience

Launched in 2016, the Year 12 Reading Mentoring Programme involves one of Blackheath High Sixth Form Year 12 students mentoring a dyslexic student with their reading. It aims to provide a safe and fun environment for a student to read aloud a book that they enjoy, build up new vocabulary and improve their comprehension. Audrey (Year 8), shares her experience:  

How have you found your time so far at Blackheath High?
I was worried about the move to Senior school, but I have found it easier than expected.

Has the Year 12 Reading Mentor programme helped you?
Yes. I took part in the programme last year and it really boosted my confidence because I was reading aloud. It has been enjoyable and has really helped my reading skills so I am going to continue with the programme this year too. You get to read out loud and the Year 12 Mentor helps by explaining the difficult words to me. I feel more confident since joining the programme. 

What is your advice to the Year 7 dyslexic students?
Don’t be lazy and try to read as much as you can. 

How can writers write for dyslexic readers?
By making the text bigger and in different colours. They could also use less confusing words and pictures. My favourite authors are David Walliams and Alex Bell because their books are easy and not boring. They are also visual.

What would you like to be when you are older?
I would like to work in Marketing or be a lawyer.
