Debating the vote for under 18s and over 70s

To mark the snap election on 8 June, the Debating Society decided to explore issues surrounding the event. Instead of focusing on the more obvious debate of “This House believes that under 18s should be allowed to vote”, the Debating Society decided that the debate should be “This House believes that over 70s should not have the vote”. In front of a packed audience in the Centenary Room, Buffy (Year 7) and Rosie (Year 8) argued in favour of the motion whilst Lily (Year 9) and Victoria (Year 9) argued against it.

The arguments pinged back and forth as the girls sought to draw on a wide range of evidence both personal and statistical to make their case. They also had to cope with questions from the audience. It was excellent to see that the girls were able to think quickly on their feet and fire back astute responses.

The winner was decided by an audience vote who decided that the House was right and that over 70s should be banned from voting. Both victors Buffy and Rosie were suitably delighted as they have only been part of the Debating Society for three weeks.
